About The Artist

Born in İzmir in 1984, Halil Vurucuoğlu graduated from the Painting Department of Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Fine Arts in 2007. With his first solo exhibition titled “Bamboo” in 2008, he has held a total of nine solo exhibitions, one in Bremen and the others in Istanbul and Ankara. Vurucuoğlu has participated in numerous fairs and group exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad, and continues his work and life in Istanbul.

Vurucuoğlu defines the process of painting as a mental and physical act that grows and develops layer by layer. The rich visual language in his works is formed by combining various concepts. Among these concepts are social phenomena, ecology, environment, and local contexts, while other subjects related to the composition of matter and meaning, the impact of humans on nature, and his personal interests further diversify this language. The interaction among these themes gains new dimensions in the artist’s works.

When classical painting techniques proved insufficient, after intense exploration and practice, he specialized in a previously unapplied, original paper-cutting technique. He became a pioneer of this method with works made from hand-cut and torn papers, colored with watercolor. Building on his positive and negative experiences and adding his imagination, Vurucuoğlu continues his practice. Although he is generally known for his paper-cutting works, he also produces using paper tearing, paper pulp, assemblage, and three-dimensional works, as well as employing various techniques such as watercolor and spray paint.
