About The Artist

Born in New York in 1968, Alex Gross completed his education at the Art Center College of Design. Gross displays an extraordinary style by articulating the bare realities he observes regarding consumer societies’ technological dependence, emotional vacancy, and lethargy through surreal compositions.

Painter Alex Gross is renowned for the distinctive vision he brings to figurative art through pop-surrealist paintings that interrogate issues surrounding globalization, consumerism, branding, entropy, and the inexorable march of time. Referencing comic books, vintage television characters, and other pop iconography, Gross crafts a witty confluence of advertising, propaganda, and Surrealism. Disturbingly illuminating the omnipresent barrage of product placement and consumer marketing in daily life, the artist explains: "The world we live in is spiritually profound yet culturally vacuous. It can be intensely violent, yet also remarkably beautiful. Globalization and technology are responsible for extraordinary advancements across the globe, just as they drive horrific tragedy and homogeny. This dichotomy fascinates me and naturally informs much of my work." Gross’s works, engaging with themes tied to consumer culture, corporate dominance, the advertising realm, and the conditions imposed by modern technology, hold a mirror to the mediocrity of contemporary existence. Based in a major globalized metropolis like Los Angeles, he frequently draws inspiration from magazine ads or billboards, as well as from television programs and films. In his oeuvre, Gross takes meticulous care to strike an equilibrium between interpretive ambiguity and overt commentary. Through his distinctive enigmatic and surrealist touches, he compellingly transforms raw reality into striking, altered vistas.
