Born in Kırşehir in 1993, Mahmut Can Akagündüz graduated from the Art Education Department of Anadolu University. He reinterprets figurative painting by combining contemporary portrait approaches with traditional motifs. Focusing particularly on female portraits, the artist highlights the strong identities of women who challenge societal norms. These portraits emphasize the constantly evolving nature of identity rather than presenting a static representation. At the center of Akagündüz’s practice are cassette tapes: painted, reworked, and assembled tapes transform into large portraits, creating a sense of nostalgia while revealing the layers of collective memory. This technique moves the portrait beyond a merely individual representation, carrying the historical weight of technological memory as well.
