“BALANCE” SOLO EXHIBITION BY KAAN BALTACI

Artopol Art Gallery is preparing to host Kaan Baltacı’s solo exhibition titled “BALANCE”. Open to visitors from April 26 – May 14, 2023 at Artopol Art Gallery in 42 Maslak, the exhibition aims to provide an anachronistic experience for its audience.

Contemporary tile art is a modern interpretation of traditional art. Kaan Baltacı’s works carry traces of traditional tile art while offering viewers a contemporary aesthetic. He interprets contemporary tile art through figurative abstractions, often placing his works within ceramic and mirrored wall panels. With these pieces, Baltacı continues the legacy of past masters while creating a modern aesthetic.

“The world is changing. Our balance is disrupted. The current state of modern art is clear. Can there be a balance between East and West, between tradition and the future adapted to today? What if Janissaries performed vogue dance? What if an iron-throne sultan sat down? What if Şahmeran joined a party in the harem? Tile art is entering a new dimension. Perhaps it’s time to shift the balances.”

Baltacı focuses on the balance emerging from the contrast of figures and themes used in his works, which forms the main concept of this exhibition.

Born in İzmir in 1985, Kaan Baltacı entered Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Turkish Arts in 2003. Beyond his main disciplines of ceramics and tile, he received training in various art practices. After graduating in 2008, he moved to Istanbul and contributed to the restoration of numerous historical buildings, including Topkapı Palace. He held his first solo exhibition in 2010 and joined W Hotel’s “Designers of the Year” team in 2012.

As the first Turkish artist selected for the U.S. Embassy Collection, Kaan Baltacı gained recognition with his “Zero Point,” “New Age,” “Sun of Ankara,” and four other works. During this period, he also worked as a costume designer and assistant for the TV series Muhteşem Yüzyıl, before opening his Atelier Kabal in Bodrum in 2016. His designs have been exhibited in New York and London. Baltacı has organized seven solo and 15 group exhibitions focusing on ceramic art and Turkish arts. With a versatile artistic approach, he continues to work across multiple disciplines and has also written his first film script.

Kaan Baltacı’s long-awaited solo exhibition “BALANCE” will be on view at Artopol Gallery from April 26 – May 14, 2023.
