Artopol Gallery presents Kadir Öztoksoy’s solo exhibition "The Gallery of Mutation" from December 4 to January 13 at Artopol Gallery. This striking project offers a powerful artistic critique while questioning the role of the individual in a world of societal norms, modern consumption habits, and perceptions of beauty.
The three-part “The Gallery Of Mutation” work is explored through the sections “Fake Plastic Dreams,” “Conditional Love,” and “Diet of Depression.” Inspired by Johan Huizinga's "Homo Ludens" (The Playful Human), Öztoksoy’s pieces use the iconic Barbie figure, popularized by American businesswoman Ruth Handler in 1959, as a lens to examine socially imposed ideals.
The first section, “Fake Plastic Dreams,” exposes the artificial world created by Barbie’s beauty and gender norms, reflecting idealized standards imposed on women’s bodies. “Conditional Love” explores how power and independence in male-female relationships are constrained by societal expectations and the pressures of being a strong woman. Finally, “Diet of Depression” critiques consumption habits, presenting an ironic depiction of the internal conflicts generated by maintaining aesthetic norms, inviting viewers to reflect on the superficiality imposed by consumer culture.
“The Gallery of Mutation” calls for an awakening by addressing decayed aesthetic values reinforced by contemporary media. K.O. challenges viewers to look beyond societal norms and asks: “Could there be a truth beyond all these appearances?”
